EX-CHANGE is a publication and year-end exhibition celebrating the work of Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture students from first year to PhD. EX-CHANGE represents an ongoing opportunity to shine new light on the SoA programs and to position the work within larger questions of research and practice. Sarah Rafson organized the first two editions of EX-CHANGE as the 2017-18 Anna Kalla Professor in Architecture.

Rafson oversaw all production of the publication, working with both faculty and students in what promises to be a new tradition at the school. The inaugural release of EX-CHANGE in spring 2018 followed an end-of-year exhibition, celebration, and discussion based on SoA student work the previous semester. The publications highlight studio work alongside excerpts from moderated conversations between students and architecture critics based on questions of how the work and research developed at the SoA relates to broader thought in academia and practice. In tandem, the EX-CHANGE publications and end-of-year exhibition work to shine new light on the SoA’s curricula and position the school’s work within broader trends and movements.
