Welcome Summer 2021 Interns!

We’re excited to introduce the newest members of PLP’s team! A warm summer welcome to Jacqueline, Chen, and Akanksha. To help introduce them to the PLP community, we asked them to share a bit about the artists, works, and publications that inspire their creative practices.

Jacqueline Hampshire (she/her) - Editorial/Curatorial Intern

Jacqueline graduated from McGill University in 2018 with a BA in Art History and is currently completing her Master of Architecture at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design in Toronto. Jacqueline has worked in various museum and gallery settings, creating editorial content, and developing programming to build trust with new audiences. Recently, Jacqueline has been considering how a shift away from building-as-practice in architecture can contribute to the discipline’s response to the climate crisis. Her current work explores the question: When this shift happens, what new forms of architectural production will take its place?

Talented Friends

I am constantly inspired by the talent and creativity of my peers in grad school. We often exchange analog work with each other and I have a growing collection on display as part of my work-from-home setup. Throughout the pandemic, it’s been a nice reminder that we will be back in the studio soon.

Pairs GSD

Pairs is a new student-led journal at Harvard GSD that places a professional, a student and an object in dialog with one another as a starting point for broader conversations. I love how the objects have been integrated throughout the text. Even though the objects are flattened in print, it makes for a tactile reading experience.

Shannon Bool is one of my favourite Canadian artists. Her tapestries in particular are incredible! I first encountered her work while I was studying art history, and now, as an architecture student, it’s been fun to return to her work and find new meaning in her representations of bodies in modern architectural spaces.

Chen Chen (he/him) -Graphic Design Intern

Chen Chen is a design student currently pursuing his BFA in Graphic Design at Maryland Institute College of Art. He has great interests in typography, publication design, and printmaking. His approach to design is rooted in a love for craft and a critical approach to tools, materials, production techniques, and the conditions in which these exist.

These photographs of avians by Graciela Iturbide moved me immeasurably that brought tears to my eyes. I love staring and gazing at them, bewildered and confused, letting the photographs taking my consciousness and unconsciousness away.

I love this shirt designed by Jesse Kanda—an artist, musician, and animator whom I really admire. His grotesque and bizarre aesthetic greatly affected my idea of beauty.

This book written by the marvelous filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky provides unique insights into the tarot as a spiritual path. It helped me greatly in learning tarot and using it as a tool to gain better self-realization, clarity, and inspiration.

Akanksha Tayal (she/her) - PLP Fellow

Akanksha is a rising second year student pursuing her B.Arch at Carnegie Mellon University, with a minor in Gender Studies. She strives to combine her interests in craft and design with her strong desire to combat injustices and inequalities. Her passion for design and architecture stems from her focus to be inclusive and push for activism in all aspects of society and community.

Peter Devito

Artist and photographer Peter Devito uses his camera to advocate for body positivity, LGBTQ+ rights, and bring light to other societal and political issues by including interviews with the subjects of his photographs. His work has been very inspiring to me and reminds me that different is beautiful.

Since I was a young child, I’ve been observant and hyper-curious about my surroundings and the people I’d encounter as I went about my day. Humans of New York was perfect for me to indulge in as it was a photoblog and book of street portraits and interviews collected on the streets of New York City which is what I wish I did as a child roaming the streets of NYC.
